The Government & Politics Society

Polity Magazine is published by University College Cork’s Government and Politics Society (more commonly known as GovPol).

UCC’s GovPol society is one of Irelands foremost university politics societies hosting renowned speakers and guests including US Ambassador Samantha Power, Professor David Runciman, TDs, Senators and MEPs as well as iconic campaigners, activists and journalists.

GovPol hosts a variety of events and initiatives and are eager to work with new partners to encourage more young people to take an active interest in politics and citizenship. Critically, UCC GovPol Soc remains as a non-partisan society and aims to promote engagement, debate and discourse across all political ideologies.

Mission Statement

The UCC Government and Politics was founded in 1998 as a space for students to uplift and foster an interest in politics on a non-partisan basis. Proudly, as we stand 25 years on, we are still working to give students the chance to learn, explore, grow and participate in politics without joining a political party.

The objectives of the Society are to:

– Maintain close links and relationships with the UCC Department of Government and Politics;

– Highlight, in a non-partisan and impartial manner, issues of importance in politics and current affairs;

– Host and facilitate debates on issues of relevance and interest to our members;

– Extend knowledge of the academic study of politics, the professional practice of politics, and the various career opportunities available;

– Provide a forum for the interaction of the various political societies on campus as well as interested students with no stated political affiliation;

– Offer members a variety of social opportunities.
